Popular Post arryarry 126
I went to Holy Trinity junior school (a long time ago) and the `PE` teacher was Robert Foulkes and he arranged for a school trip to watch Stoke City v Halifax Town. It was my very first ever live Halifax Town game and from my first look at a proper football club, I was hooked. Then when Les Massie scored at our end I was doubly hooked. It was worse than heroin (I think???) and I have been addicted to Halifax Town FC ever since Damn you, Les Massie. You were my first town hero and you will be sadly missed. RIP I to went to that game on a bus trip organised by what was then the Halifax Technical High School, which my older brother went to, I would have been 12. What a day out, Les Massie scoring past the legendary Gordan Banks. Like you I was hooked. RIP Les, and thanks for the memories.
Angus 945
A Shay legend. Never seemed to be the hardest worker but who cares when you found the net as frequently as he did. Wish we had someone similar now.

RIP Les. I've already posted this on another platform, but I was really saddened to hear of the passing of former Halifax Town legend Les Massie. He had, of course, made his name with Huddersfield and partnered a certain Denis Law in his early days. Les was well before my time, though I can share a story that always makes me smile. When I'd written my first book, a 31-year history of the club 1968-1999 (Ball To Lillis) my publisher wanted me to get two former players to attend a book signing session at WH Smith, Halifax. I put forward the names of Les Massie and Bill Atkins, but when he asked me to contact them personally (after I'd acquired their phone numbers), I got cold feet and didn't want the morning to be a flop on my behalf. I got back to my publisher, who said he would ring them himself and get back to me. He duly did, saying, 'Guess what? They'd love to be there.' I arrived early on the morning of the session, with Les Massie already there, reading through the book's pages. Bill Atkins later arrived, and bearing in mind I'd never ever spoken to these guys before, we had an enjoyable morning with a steady stream of fans coming to get the books signed (mainly by them, not so much me, obviously!). I'll never forget that day, and after Les was given a a complimentary copy of the book, I hope it gave him much pleasure reading about those days with Halifax Town which coincided with promotion from the Fourth Division in 1968-69, with his own contribution not be understated. He actually scored the goal (v Rochdale in the penultimate game) which clinched it. 8

Richmond96 181
The Newport 3-0 (Massey hatrick) was my first game. One of the goals was a shor from the half way line. Legend.

townmad 912
I know time dims the memories but when I think back I can never recall his attempts on goal going high or wide, in fact they all seemed to finish in the net. R.I. P
