Sad news, my Man Of The Tournament in 1966 world cup winning team. Was a rock during the whole tournament & caused havoc on his marauding runs from defence. didn't know he was suffering from dementia :( RIP

Thought he was a great player .. under appreciated as a classic centre half ..

was a decent country manager too for Ireland ..think they gave him citizenship as a honour

then post football just an interesting bloke doing his fishing programme

Did he ever play against Town, maybe in a West Riding Cup game?

When Town won promotion to the 3rd division, Leeds played Town in a friendly and gave the Town players a guard of honour as they ran onto the pitch. If he wasn't injured he should have played in that game.

Think Big Jack played and they beat us 5-0.

A true giant of the game..... literally and metaphorically. Plus, he’s the only man who looks better in a baseball hat than Robert Mugabe.

Heard Shaykehands gone shopping to buy baseball hat to cover the hole on the top of his head

Leeds United won that game 5-0 and Jack Charlton scored one of the goals.

He played against Halifax Town many times over the years in the West Riding Senior Cup, the first time being on 3 October 1955 at Elland Road. Big Jack lined up in the half-back line alongside John Charles and Leeds won 2-0.

I'm assuming that's an online database you're copying from @rdj? I have a similar database with Town results, with info scoured from all over the place. It's amazing how many times I've come across conflicting info though, especially with regard to attendances. For instance, Town's first ever home game back in 1911 - I've seen four different attendances for the game.

The crowd for the WRCC game above, as given by the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Mercury, was 6,500. Reading the match report, Leeds absolutely battered us, but our 'young forwards' caused plenty of trouble with limited opportunities. When I asked the question about Charlton I never even thought to check my database - this is one of the games where I do have the opposition line-up, due to having a photocopy of that cutting. I've had that one a long time, probably picked it up from Johnny Meynell though I can't be sure.

I had packed all my Town stuff away ready for our next house move but the temptation to rifle through it all is too tempting to ignore sometimes.
