Hoddie the book I read was the State of Africa by Martin  Meredith it was written in 2005 and covers Africa from each states independence up to about 2000. It is really interesting  and available  on Amazon. Re the minority thing  Nigeria and Zimbabwe  spring to mind the Biafran  Civil war  and Mugabe's  massacre  of the Matabele tribe or the Tutsi Hutu thing in Rwanda. We weren't  perfect far from it although the majority of africans shipped to America were the captives from the constant trible wars in West  Africa. Europeans never physically captured the slaves themselves. Up to the slave trade they were usually killed but then the Europeans provided  a market meaning they  were worth something alive.

One of the reasons the British colonised West Africa was to stop the slave trade.

I'll have to add it to the list to buy. Can never know too much about history imo.

Terrible times,  they would almost certainly been murdered by the Russians had they returned, deemed to have helped the Germans.

My first wife's father was Rumanian and was forced to join the German army when his village was overran. the first one to say no was shot on the spot. He soon managed to get himself caught by the allies and was shipped over here to work on the farms. He never got to see or hear from any of his family ever again. There is no way he would have dared to go back home.

Why would you want to commemorate people that have wrecked this country?

Totally agree about one for Margaret Thatcher. Those who want rid of existing statues claim they want more diversity and equality, yet that would be impossible without the country’s first female PM. I’m sure Sadiq Khan could find 1001 reasons as to why not but none would come close to that simple fact.

I think there is one of Thatcher in the House of Commons.

Just seen this on Twitter from some Jewish commentator and I can certainly see the first part of it happening.

If protesters continue to deface monuments like Winston Churchill's statue and burn British flags on the Cenotaph, you will see groups forming to defend them.

These groups will be composed primarily of young, angry white men and led by people with links to groups like the EDL and Tommy Robinson.

The groups will gather in city centres to "defend our country". They will have names with words like "patriotic", "British", "defence" in them.

Inevitably, they will clash with the current protesters and the police. Under pressure from the media and political class, the police will overreact. They will treat these groups differently to the BLM protesters. They will use force. They will detain people for breaking lockdown rules. They will issue stiff sentences.

The media will do the opposite of what they did with the BLM protesters - instead of talking about how "27 police officers were injured in "largely peaceful" protests", they will run major front page headlines like "27 police officers injured by far right violence".

At this point, the majority of the public will lose the ability to be nuanced. The double standards will be too obvious to ignore. Fuelled by a constant stream of images of white people kneeling, washing POC feet and publicly apologising, as they already are, they will conclude that their very identity is under attack.

At this point, all their sensible aversion to supporting thuggish far right groups will evaporate. They will believe they are in a war for their survival and extreme measures are justified.

At the next election, which will likely be brought forward for one reason or another fuelled by mass unemployment resulting from the economic depression, far right parties will make significant inroads. When I say “far right”, I am not talking about what the far left call “far right” such as anyone who talks about controlling immigration. I’m talking about genuine far right parties that talk about *reversing* immigration and deportations.

These parties will not win seats or get anywhere near Government but they will put a UKIP-like pressure on the Conservatives. Boris Johnson will likely be ousted as too soft and liberal and replaced by a law and order hardliner.

From here, I’m afraid, the journey is all too obvious. The only way to prevent this is to reverse the re-racialisation of our society. Either we learn to live together or the very idea of a multi-ethnic society is over.

I stumbled across this on Twitter and thought about your post, Bubba.  There's so much to say about this picture that I don't really know where to start!

"Do you know an elderly relative that fought in WW1" , ffs:doh:

Apparently BLM have called off their march on Saturday but Antifa are still planning to protest which just proves that it is mainly white people hijacking blm for their own ends.

Khan should ban the fla protests and ban the antifa demonstration.

The Fawlty Towers episode was the "don't mention the war" one but it has been removed because the Major uses the term 'wog'.

I don't agree with the censoring of our cultural heritage. It's just another way to divert attention from the real issue, and although some supporters of the BLM movement may enjoy watching 'the white man' self-flagellate, I bet there are many more who realise that it doesn't actually further their cause. You cannot change what's happened, everyone's efforts should be focussed on moving forward, making better choices.

I thought he corrected Basil as to the then colloquially acceptable terms for the West Indies and Indian cricket players?

He was talking about someone else, but yeah.

In his anecdote, the Major tells Basil Fawlty that he went to the test with a woman who "kept referring to the Indians as niggers. 'No, no, no,' I said, 'the niggers are the West Indians. These people are wogs.'"

I wonder if we know what history our children/grandchildren are being taught in school.  A relatives grandchildren came home from school - "what did you learn today?"

We learnt about WWII and the start when Britain declared war on the Nazis.  "We declared war on Germany, there was a broadcast which said that."

They wouldn't have it.  How could we have declared war on Germany, it's ridiculous.  How could Granny know?  They had been told the 'truth' at school and that was that.

We did decalre war on Germany though (And rightly so in my opinion, although we probably should have done it after the annexation of Austria/Hungary) .

Britain told Germany if they invaded Poland it would be seen as an act of war. Germany then invaded Poland and Britian declared war.

I think you mean the Sudetenland in 1938, but yeah you are probably right.

We could in all honesty have stopped AH in 1936 when he re-occupied  the Rhineland.

But this is probably another thread on its own.
