PW interview int' Courier

Never warmed to JF

dour, dull and deluded at times

negative football

PW is a breath of fresh air in comparison

One of JF's problems was that he was not a people person. Ok in some walks of life but a bit of a handicap when you're a football manager. And similar to Bracewell, he played at a much higher level than the team he managed. It's like teaching - if you struggled with something yourself, you're in a better position to teach it to others (those who can't - teach!).

Application a bit strange that I used one this afternoon.

I literally used the word literally four times yesterday. And twice today. Just now.

Two weeks before the season started and JF walks and just a few players signed , Mr B got to make a big decision so he signed up Pete Wild and now 3rd in the league which in short is a miracle so this could turn out to be quite a season.

Both Heath and JF refused to change their systems despite the awful runs and club position. BH got sacked and JF kept us up, then the following season Rodney came in and scored the goals that kept us in this league (whether Rodney was bought in by JF or by Mr B remains unanswered).

PW altered his system when we signed Rodney and we have prospered since then and that's the difference. Without the Rodney signing PW could of carried on persevering with TSS in which case we would be well off the play offs by now and PWs job would be on the line. Learning and adapting is the key here.

When you look at it that way then the season is a success already - anything else is a bonus....

It is but we still have much to achieve yet, and it can still go badly wrong.

I think the scales will tip towards the former rather than the latter.

Spot on. Its what good managers do. Not just blindly follow their track regardless of if it is working or not.

As PW said in his Courier interview, 1st target was 50 points - smashed it. 2nd target top 10 possibly top 7 - on target.

Last but not least top 3 spot - still a possibility.

We can but dare to dream....

Even Mr Wild thinks we’ve over achieved

There's lots of different ways to look at it but overall the team have done really well to get where they are. This season has followed a similar sort of pattern in that they started brilliantly and then tailed off and their bad patch and then an uplift and another good little run.

I feel if we can get Browny back fit and then perhaps add an experienced midfielder we are well and truly interested he mix. We might need another centre half but if we can keep everyone for this team are a play off team all day long.

They are their on merit.

Breath of fresh air is the lad. People were comparing him to Darren Kelly when he came in. He’s more like Chris Wilder. Straight talking no nonsense, honest and realistic.

This season has the potential to be special. Apart from the tough run in Nov/Dec when we had injuries and a tough set of games, we’ve been very good.

He changed the system before signing rodney. Rodney came in for the game against Maidenhead. Previous to that we had used the 3-5-2 against Chesterfield, Stockport, Barnet and Torquay with Redshaw and Allen up front (TSS in the Torquay game) so he’d already decided enough was enough. Rodney has just strengthened that and suits the formation perfectly. He’s absolutely relentless in working the opposition back line both on and off the ball and we’re extremely lucky to have him. Who knows, if we get promoted we could have a chance of signing him up permanently.

There may have been reasons for sticking with a system that had worked but had clearly been sussed by opponents, we may never know. PW altered it to a now functioning system, credit to him for that.

I know posters on here are supposed to be football  illiterates but the majority would have advocated the current formation with the addition of a Rodney/Redshaw type partnership, again credit to PW & the BOD for making it happen. At least I am watching the match again instead of staring into space wondering why I bothered.

Luckily the availability of Redshaw/Rodney plus the return on injured players enabled us to do that. The chairman backed the manager to bring 2 good signings in too.
