Following Halifax Town's promotion to the Third Division in 1969, the club undertook a three-match tour of France, Luxembourg and Belgium, supposedly as a reward. Goalkeeper Alex Smith refused to go after his wife had just given birth, and so Ball turned to his former club Manchester City, and though it was thought young reserve Joe Corrigan would fill in for Smith, it was Ron Healey who duly went with the side and played in all three matches.

This story was confirmed to me only on Friday by Alex Smith himself, following the funeral of George Mulhall. Alex described Halifax Town's European adventure as 'the tour from hell', and indeed, players Mark Pearson and Ivan Hampton walked out and returned home.
